The Brussels Shakespeare Society began over 30 years ago with a humble notice in the Bulletin in which Ian Flintoff asked if anyone was interested in performing Shakespeare in English. The response was considerable. Ian was at this time the Guardian correspondent for Brussels and was later to become an actor with the national theatre in London.

The society's first and simple beginnings was to hire a tiny 30 seat theatre, Theatre Ile St Louis just off the Grand Place. They began performing a series of anthologies, which were essentially rehearsed readings, gradually gaining confidence for a full production.

In the summer of 1976, the society preformed its first 'al fresco' performance à la Regents Park in the garden of the Jones family in Lasne and within two years they staged their first chateau production, ‘The Merchant of Venice’ at Ecaussines-Lalaing.

In thirty years the BSS have staged all of Shakespeare’s comedies, several of the Tragedies and one of the Histories. In addition they have ventured into Greek Tragedy, Restoration comedy, Beckett, Lorca, Fry, Stoppard and a modern version of the Mystery Plays, as well as workshops run by prominent names in British Theatre such as Andrew Wade, voice coach of the Royal Shakespeare Society and Andrew Visnevski, drama teacher at RADA.
